CASES

When the Kindle was launched a year ago, the only case option around was the one that came with the device. It works, but it’s a bit stripped-down and not everyone has been happy with the haphazard way it holds the Kindle in place. Now, a year later, there are half a dozen companies offering case designs to appeal to pretty much everyone: the business traveler, the night owl with a sleeping spouse, the fashion-conscious, even the habitual note-taker.

Here’s an overview of what I’ve found so far. Many of these I wouldn’t have known about if Kindlerama readers hadn’t told me about them in the first place, so thanks! (And please let me know if you run across any others!)

Back when there wasn’t really a secondary case market for the Kindle, I suggested some ideas for what I’d like to see in a case. I’m happy to see that two and a half of my ideas have become reality–short-run handmade cases by Strangedog, cases with built-in lights by Periscope and M-edge, and (here’s the “half” idea) DecalGirl’s skins for changing the color of the plastic Kindle shell. Of the other ideas–papercraft cases and waterproof cases–I’m sure we’ll see a waterproof version at some point by next summer, considering the Kindle still isn’t exactly beach friendly; and I’m not sure a papercraft “case” was every very practical to begin with.
