CrunchGear has posted a rumor that Amazon might release one or more new Kindle models over the next year:
The first is an updated version with the same sized screen, a smaller form factor, and an improved interface. The source told us that Amazon has “skipped three or four generations,” comparing the old Kindle to the 1st gen iPod and the new version to something like the sexy iPod Mini.
The second new model, which is shaped like an 8 1/2 x 11-inch piece of paper, is considerably bigger than the current model and should be available next year.
This is an unverified rumor, of course, and should be taken with a grain of salt, but it’s interesting to imagine what one could do with a larger e-ink screen the size of a standard sheet of paper. You’d lose the portability factor but gain a wealth of business and education applications, I’d imagine. The device could finally become a viable platform for comics and graphic novels, too (so long as you can do without color).
My personal choices for improvements are far less ambitious, however. Just get rid of the pointed corners, which dig into my hand when I hold the device for a long period of time, and fix the awkward button layout so that accidental page turns become a thing of the past.
